The "Trending or Ranging?" (ToR) indicator is designed to help traders quickly identify the current "personality" of a financial market. In trading, different environments require different strategies: trending markets usually favor moving averages, while ranging (sideways) markets often work better with oscillators. This tool helps you distinguish between these two states at a glance.
Core Functionality
The script works by analyzing multiple timeframes simultaneously—ranging from 1-minute intervals up to 4-hour charts. For each of these timeframes, it calculates and displays three primary pieces of information:
1. Trend Strength (ADX Values) The tool uses the Average Directional Index (ADX) to measure how strong a trend is. It provides a live numerical value for several timeframes (M1, M5, M15, M30, H1, and H4). These values are color-coded to provide an immediate visual cue:
- Light Blue: Indicates the market is currently Ranging (low trend strength).
- Lime Green: Indicates a Bullish Trend (upward movement with sufficient strength).
- Red: Indicates a Bearish Trend (downward movement with sufficient strength).
2. Trend Momentum (Directional Change) Beyond just identifying the trend, the tool tracks whether that trend is gaining or losing steam. It compares current data against previous data to display descriptive labels:
- STRONGER: The current trend is accelerating.
- WEAKER: The current trend is decelerating or losing power.
- RANGING: The market lacks a clear direction and is moving sideways.
3. Visual Symbols To make the data even easier to read, the indicator uses specific icons (Wingdings symbols):
- Squiggly Lines: Visually represent a "Range" state where no clear move is happening.
- Arrows: Point upward or downward to signify the direction of the trend, with different intensities based on whether the movement is considered "strong" or "developing."
Additional Features
- Spread Monitor: The tool includes a built-in spread tracker. This shows you the current cost of entering a trade in real-time. If the spread exceeds a user-defined limit, the number turns red as a warning.
- Multi-Timeframe Overview: Because it summarizes data from multiple periods (like 1-minute and 4-hour) in one window, it allows you to see if a short-term move is supported by the larger long-term trend.
Summary for the User
This indicator acts as a dashboard. Instead of forcing you to switch between dozens of different charts to see what the market is doing, it gathers that information into one place. It tells you at a glance whether you should be looking for "breakout" opportunities (Trending) or "buy-low/sell-high" opportunities within a corridor (Ranging).
